Two Black Shirts Got Together and Became a Dress -- Part I

I go through these phases when I try new activities. Then I dive into my usual modus operandi where I get so excited and buy a whole bunch of pieces that I think are absolute must-haves. Sometimes I think that I come up with these new ventures so that I can do that. While some do come about, other don't. For the latter, I end up with a bunch of clothes that I thought were absolutely necessary but are now useless.

But as in my usual modus operandi, I got excited and of course went out and bought a whole bunch of crap that somehow made sense at the time.

So I was left with a lot of junky shirt luggage which I had to unload.  Seriously, I would never wear this stuff out in public (or outside of a gym).

Look at this shirt -- I didn’t stop at 1 shirt, I got 2 in black alone.

I hate throwing stuff out and I hate having them mocking me every time I see them.

Sooooo, I’m doing something about it.  Especially since there are 2 in one color alone.

I decided to turn those 2 into a drop waist dress.

Now for a bit of technical stuff.  You're more than welcome to skip any part you like ;)  Unless you happen to need it.

For shirt # 1 -- Went down about 22” from the HPS (High Shoulder Point) – it is the one crossing the neckline and shoulder.  Usually the waist is about 17” down in the back from the HPS .

HPS is where your shoulder intersects with your neck.

I use tissue paper when sewing knit.  It helps to stabilize the fabric.  I get a whole bunch at the dollar store and cut them into 2”-3” strips and just use them whenever.

Try using a knit stitch or a small zigzag stitch.

Hold the tissue paper on both sides and rip it out. It should come out pretty clean.
And now you have a really funny looking thing on your hands.

Make sure to cut the longer shirt. The short one is the top which we already measured.

Even out the hem (you can do this on yourself standing in front of the mirror).

This shirt was meant to be worn on top of a sports bra or something, serious side gap going on here.

Cut a 3” x 6” piece -- completely random measurement. Can also use different fabric and/or color on this.

Wrap around the top of the back.
Getting there.  Wooohoooo!

Now let’s see what else we can do.

Wrap.

Stitch -- making sure to tack at both ends.

Turn right side out.

Tack at different locations to anchor it down.

It is a very creative idea to make a nice wearable dress from junky shirt beside a very easy way to do it with pictures.
